Sanitary Sewer System Inspection & Smoke Testing

Sanitary Sewer System Inspection & Smoke Testing

The City of Hot Springs has contracted RJN Group to perform sanitary sewer inspections on approximately 15% of the system. These areas have been prioritized due to their high amount of surface water that inflows or infiltrates into the sanitary sewer. Over the next few weeks, inspection crews will begin conducting a physical survey of the City of Hot Springs’s sewer system. This effort is part of an ongoing initiative to identify defects and other maintenance needs within the system.
As part of this effort, RJN crews will:
  • Open and inspect manholes located in streets and easements
  • Conduct "SMOKE TESTING" of sewer lines
What to Expect During Smoke Testing
Smoke testing is a routine method used to locate cracks, leaks, and faulty connections in the sewer system.
  • The smoke is NON-TOXIC, HARMLESS, AND DOES NOT POSE A FIRE HAZARD
  • You may see smoke coming from roof vent stacks or openings in the ground—this is normal.
  • Smoke should not enter your home unless there is defective plumbing or a dry drain trap.
  • If smoke does enter your home, this could indicate a potential pathway for sewer gases. In this case, we recommend contacting a licensed plumber.
  • If you have drains that are rarely used, pour water into them to fill the trap and prevent smoke from entering.
If smoke does enter your building and you need assistance, feel free to speak with a member of the smoke testing crew working in your area.
Backyard Easement Access
Some manholes and sewer lines are located along backyard property lines within utility easements. Crews may need access to these areas during the inspection process.
  • Field personnel will be in uniform and carry official identification badges.
  • NO ONE WILL NEED TO ENTER YOUR HOME AT ANY TIME
  • You do not need to be present during the inspection.
How Long Will It Take?
Smoke testing in each area is expected to last a few hours. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
The information gathered will help the City of Hot Springs and RJN Group improve and maintain reliable sewer services.
