Oaklawn 2025-2026 Racing Season Update

Oaklawn 2025-2026 Racing Season Update

The victory was draped in history, almost 70 years of Oaklawn family history.

Kelsey Danner became the fifth trainer in her family to win a race at Oaklawn when Exosome edged Top Level by a neck in a Feb. 28 entry-level allowance for 3-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles.

Danner follows relatives W.J. Danner (his first Oaklawn victory was in 1957), Harry Holcomb (1967), Doug Danner (1982) and Mark Danner (1994) into the Oaklawn winner’s circle. W.J. Danner is the father of Doug Danner and the uncle of Mark Danner. Holcomb is Kelsey Danner’s maternal grandfather. Mark Danner, now retired, is her father.

“I don’t run very often at Oaklawn,” Kelsey Danner said. “It was nice. It is my hometown, so it was nice to win there.”

Danner, 39, went out on her own in 2017 after coming up under her father and several training heavyweights, including Hall of Famers D. Wayne Lukas and Carl Nafzger.

Danner had a small string in 2018 at Oaklawn and made three starts at the meeting. She didn’t have another runner in Hot Springs until Gnome finished fifth in the $150,000 Ozark Stakes for 3-year-old sprinters Feb. 16. Danner’s fifth career Oaklawn starter, Exosome, became her first winner.

A Triple Crown nominee for NBS Stable (John Ballantyne), Exosome was returning to dirt after finishing a well-beaten fifth in a Feb. 7 allowance race on the artificial surface at Turfway Park. Exosome also added blinkers for his Oaklawn debut, which carried a $125,000 purse.

“I decided to run him back on the dirt after he didn’t like the Tapeta at Turfway,” Danner said. “I think the blinkers probably made about five lengths difference. He was up close to the pace. He’s still maturing, so maybe it was race experience, also.”

Danner said next-race plans are pending for Exosome, who finished sixth in the Lecomte Stakes (G3) Jan. 17 at Fair Grounds. Danner said Exosome will be considered for a return trip to Oaklawn for the $1.5 million Arkansas Derby (G1) March 28.

“Probably going to aim for a stake at the end of the month,” Danner said. “Yet to be decided where. All cards are on the table right now.”

Ballantyne purchased Exosome, a Kentucky-bred son of Candy Ride, for $200,000 at the 2024 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Exosome has a 2-0-0 record from five starts overall and earnings of $145,195.

Danner is based in Kentucky and has approximately 90 horses in training. She entered Saturday with 270 career victories, according to Equibase, racing’s official data gathering organization.

Mark Danner, whose clients once included Oaklawn owner Charles Cella, started his last horse in 2017. Kelsey Danner’s mother, Kelly Danner, was Oaklawn’s horsemen’s relations director and a member of its media relations department during the 1980s and 1990s.

“(Kelsey) was born the day after the Arkansas Derby in 1986 and spent most of her young years in the press trailer in the infield during the Racing Festival of the South,” Danner said.

Kelly Danner is now racing operations manager for Churchill Downs.
