Oaklawn 2025-2026 Racing Season Update
Christian Torres
The fastest jockey to reach $2 million in purse earnings in Oaklawn history is also the fastest to reach $3 million. Cristian Torres eclipsed $3 million at the 2025-2026 meeting when heavily favored Nerazurri scored a 2 ¼-length victory in Friday’s $135,000 Trivista Overnight Stakes for older fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles. Nerazurri ($2.60) represented Torres’ third victory on the card and pushed his earnings at the meet to $3,015,535. Friday was Day 27 of the meeting. “That’s crazy,” Torres said during training hours Saturday morning. “Can’t complain at all. It’s been great. Horses are running good, so I’m enjoying it.” Torres hit $3 million in purse earnings on Day 29 of the 2023-2024 meeting, when he finished with a single-season Oaklawn record $6,181,368. Torres, 28, is a two-time Oaklawn riding champion. The Trivista Overnight was Torres’ fifth stakes victory at the meeting. All five have been for dual Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse. They also teamed to win the Oaklawn Sports Overnight Jan. 1 with Nerazurri, $300,000 Martha Washington Feb. 6 with Search Party, $1 million Southwest (G3) Feb. 6 with Silent Tactic and the $150,000 Dixie Belle Feb. 14 with French Friction. Torres also won a Dec. 20 starter allowance aboard Nerazurri, who returned to run second behind stablemate and champion Nitrogen in the $250,000 Bayakoa Stakes (G3) Feb. 7. Nerazurri had been under consideration for the Beholder Mile (G1) March 7 at Santa Anita before Casse opted for the softer spot. “She’s doing awesome,” said Torres, who also rode Nerazurri in the Bayakoa. “She’s gotten really good since she got here. Came back quick and still showed up. She’s a great mare. Hopefully, she stays sound the whole year.” Torres bids for his fourth career seven-figure victory in Sunday’s $1 million Rebel Stakes (G2). The 1 1/16-mile Rebel is Oaklawn’s third Kentucky Derby qualifying race. Torres has the return call on Silent Tactic, who mowed down his rivals in the stretch to win the Southwest by 3 ¼ lengths. The 1 1/16-mile Southwest was Oaklawn’s second Kentucky Derby qualifying race. “I’m just really excited about him, how he seems to be improving race by race,” Torres said. “He’s showing up, so we’ll see what happens tomorrow. But the way he’s doing, he should run big again.” Torres’ most lucrative career victory to date came aboard Timberlake for trainer Brad Cox in the 2024 Rebel (G2), then worth $1.25 million. That victory pushed Torres’ earnings at the 2023-2024 meeting to $3,410,708. Torres became the fastest jockey to reach $2 million purse earnings at an Oaklawn meeting after a riding double Feb. 7, Day 16 of the scheduled 64-day split season that began Dec. 12. Torres set the previous mark at the 2023-2024 meeting, hitting $2 million in purse earnings on Day 19. Nerazurri was Casse’s ninth stakes victory at the 2025-2026 meeting. Torres entered Saturday with a meet-high 35 victories. Booth Returns Sunday Booth, one of the top sprinters last season at Oaklawn, is scheduled to make his 5-year-old debut in Sunday’s third race, a $126,000 allowance for older horses at six furlongs. The 6-5 program favorite, Booth hasn’t started since finishing second, beaten a nose by millionaire multiple Oaklawn stakes winner Banishing, in the Jeff Hall Memorial Stakes at 6 ½ furlongs July 20 at Ellis Park. Booth was a three-time stakes winner last season at Oaklawn, taking the inaugural $145,000 Commodore Overnight, $250,000 Whitmore (G3) and $500,000 Count Fleet (G3) for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen. All three races were six furlongs. Booth won the Commodore Overnight in a sizzling 1:08.64. “I’m obviously freakishly excited to have him back in here at Oaklawn, where he’s done his best work,” Asmussen said. Asmussen said Booth is using Sunday’s race as a prep for the $500,000 Count Fleet (G3) April 11. Regular rider Erik Asmussen is scheduled to ride Booth, who will break from the rail in the six-horse field. Millionaire multiple Oaklawn stakes winner Tejano Twist (2-1) is also entered. Probable post time for the third race is 1:02 p.m. (Central). Racing begins at noon. |
