Oaklawn 2024-2025 Racing Season Update

Hot Springs Stakes Bulletin

HOT SPRINGS (AR) – Jockey Jose Ortiz continued his Oaklawn hot streak Sunday, guiding Winchell Thoroughbreds’ Clever Again to a front-running, four-length score in the one-mile $200,000 Hot Springs Stakes for 3-year-olds.

Ortiz won both of the marquee races on Saturday’s Oaklawn card, the $750,000 Fantasy Stakes (G2) aboard Quietside and the $1.5 Arkansas Derby (G1) aboard Sandman.

Trained by Hal of Famer Steve Asmussen, Clever Again, the 6-5 second choice, dueled briefly with even-money favorite Gaming before assuming control by 1 ½ lengths while cruising to a :23.76 opening quarter. Gaming could get no closer than one length after the opening half in :46.98 and began to lengthen his lead thereafter. Final time on a fast-rated track was 1:37.13.

Gaming, who briefly lost a position to Perfect Force with a quarter-mile remaining, wrested back control to finish 2 ¼- lengths in front of that eventual third-place finisher. Clever Again returned mutuel payoffs of $4.40, $2.40 and $2.10. Perfect Force finished 10 ½-length in front of fourth-place finisher Max Got Excited and Hola Joey and Bout Tree Fiddy completed the order of finish. Landing Craft and Gryphon were scratched.

A son of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, Clever Again has now won two of his three lifetime starts and the $117,000 purse he collected Sunday improve his career bankroll to $198,400.
