Matron Stakes Bulletin
HOT SPRINGS (AR) – Haulin Ice became the highest earning Arkansas-bred female Saturday with her frontrunning five-length win in Oaklawn’s $250,000 Matron Stakes, a six-furlong sprint for older fillies and mares.
Trained by Saffie Joseph, Jr., and giving jockey Francisco Arietta his third win of the day less than halfway through the 14-race Arkansas Derby Day card, Haulin Ice broke sharply from the gate and led the field through a brisk opening quarter-mile in :21.98. She covered the opening half-mile in :44.98 and withstood a brief challenge entering the stretch from the previously unbeaten Almostgone Rocket while covering the six furlongs in 1:09.31 over the surface rated as muddy.
Sent off as the 3-1 second choice in the field, Haulin Ice returned mutuel payoffs of $8.80, $3.20 and $2.20. Almostgone Rocket, who finished two lengths in front of third-place finisher Benedetta, returned $2.60 and $2.10. Benedetta returns $2.20 to show. American Band, Holly Dolly and Lady Moscato completed the order of finish.
A 4-year-old daughter of Coal Front, Haulin Ice earned $149,250 from her seventh win in 13 career starts, bringing her total earnings to $688,100, an all-time record for an Arkansas-bred filly or mare.
