Oaklawn 2024-2025 Racing Season Update

Oaklawn 2024-2025 Racing Season Update

2-23-25: Rebel Stakes Advance

Take three.

G W’s Girl bids for her second consecutive stakes victory in the twice-postponed $150,000 Dixie Belle for 3-year-old filly sprinters Monday at Oaklawn.

Probable post time for the six-furlong Dixie Belle, the ninth of 10 races, is 4:51 p.m. (Central). Racing begins at 12:30 p.m.

The Dixie Belle was originally scheduled to be run Feb. 15, but Oaklawn scrapped its final five races that day because of  heavy rain. The Dixie Belle was moved Feb. 23, but arctic temperatures led Oaklawn to adjust its racing schedule this week – Friday’s card (subsequently canceled) was moved to Saturday, Saturday’s card was moved to Sunday and Sunday’s card, including the re-drawn Dixie Belle, was moved to Monday.

G W’s Girl, who is trained by Greg Compton, exits a one-length victory in Oaklawn’s $150,000 Mockingbird Stakes at six furlongs Jan. 4. The Mockingbird marked the dirt debut for the lightly raced G W’s Girl, a daughter of Munnings who is the 7-5 program favorite for the Dixie Belle.

Compton said he considered stretching out G W’s Girl (2 for 3 overall) in the $300,000 Martha Washington Stakes Jan. 25 or Sunday’s $500,000 Honeybee Stakes (G3) – two 1 1/16-mile Kentucky Oaks preps at Oaklawn – but decided to concentrate on sprints after missing substantial training in January because of harsh winter weather.

“Seems like it’s been going on for two weeks now, but it’s just been a week,” Compton said of the delays. “Definitely not an ideal situation here, but it’s what everyone in the race is dealing with. It’s all pretty much local horses, so I don’t think anybody’s got an advantage on anyone. I love the post position. I think we drew favorably.”

Compton said he hopes the Dixie Belle is a bridge to the major spring objective for G W’s Girl, Keeneland’s  $400,000 Beaumont Stakes (G2) for 3-year-old fillies at the “about” seven-furlongs distance April 6.

Compton trains G W’s Girl for Mag Racing Stables of Gregg Massanelli and Margaret Molleston. Massanelli is an orthopedic surgeon in El Dorado, Ark. Molleston is an executive with GeoSouthern Energy Partners, a petroleum and natural gas production company headquartered in suburban Houston. Compton said Molleston is originally from Magnolia, Ark., about 35 miles west of El Dorado.

G W’s Girl represented Mag’s first stakes winner and fourth victory overall. Compton also saddled Mag’s first winner, Lilms Constitution, Feb. 19, 2024, at Oaklawn. Compton, as an agent for Mag, purchased G W’s Girl for $130,000 at the OBS March Sale of Two-Year-Olds in training. Compton said Mag declined “big money” to sell G W’s Girl following the Mockingbird.

“Not a lot has changed as far as how I feel about the horse,” Compton said. “I think we’ve got a great shot here. Still, there’s a lot of speed in the race and we should be able to sit and get a good trip. If we’re good enough, we should be able to run them down.”

G W’s Girl is scheduled to break from post 7 in the projected eight-horse field and carry topweight of 119 pounds. Francisco Arrieta retains the mount. The Dixie Belle originally had seven entrants.

Other top contenders include original entrants You’ll Be Back (3-1) for trainer Tom Amoss and Miss Martini (4-1) for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen. You’ll Be Back (1 for 3 overall) returns to sprinting after finishing second, beaten three-quarters of a length by Jenkin, in the Oaklawn’s one-mile $175,000 Year’s End Stakes Dec. 29.

The Year’s End was the two-turn debut for You’ll Be Back, a daughter of Practical Joke who broke her maiden Nov. 30 at the Fair Grounds.

“You’ll Be Back really had a good maiden win here, going six furlongs,” the Fair Grounds-based Amoss said. “We tried her long over there. I thought she was a little aggressive throughout the race. I don’t know that she’s suited for two turns at this moment. So, I like the turnback for her.”

Miss Martini will be making her stakes and 3-year-old debut after breaking her maiden by 4 ¼ lengths Dec. 29 at Oaklawn. The 6-furlong race was her second lifetime start. Miss Martini moved from the rail to post 8 in the re-draw.

Asmussen also entered Innocence, who exits a five-length victory in the $65,000 Borderplex Stakes at 6 ½ furlongs Jan. 17 at Sunland Park.

Monday’s card also features the inaugural $145,000 Commodore Overnight Stakes for older horses at 6 furlongs.

The Commodore drew six entrants, including 6-5 program favorite Wendelssohn for trainer Chris Hartman. Wendelssohn is seeking his third victory at the 2024-2025 Oaklawn meeting.

The Commodore goes as the fourth race, with probable post time 2:09 p.m. (Central). It is restricted to horses that have never won a stakes race, other than state-bred.

Finish Lines

After canceling Saturday’s card because of freezing temperatures, Oaklawn re-opened for training shortly before 2 p.m. (Central) Saturday. Kentucky Derby alum and 2024 Arkansas Derby runner-up Just Steel is scheduled to make his 4-year-old debut in Sunday’s seventh race at Oaklawn, a $131,000 second-level allowance for older horses at six furlongs. A major spring target for Just Steel is the $500,000 Oaklawn Mile (G3) March 29, Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas said. … Ingrid Mason pulled within 137-136 of Lynn Chleborad in the race for winningest female trainer in Oaklawn history with J. P. Race’s victory in the second race last Monday. J. P. Race ($7.20) represented Mason’s first local victory for Danny Caldwell, a four-time leading owner at Oaklawn.
