Oaklawn 2024-2025 Racing Season Update
12-13-25
G W’s Girl bids for her second consecutive stakes victory in the $150,000 Dixie Belle for 3-year-old filly sprinters Saturday at Oaklawn.
Probable post time for the six-furlong Dixie Belle, the ninth of 10 races, is 4:51 p.m. (Central). Racing begins at 12:35 p.m.
Trained by Greg Compton, G W’s Girl exits a one-length victory in the six-furlong $150,000 Mockingbird Stakes on Jan. 4 at Oaklawn. The Mockingbird marked the dirt debut for the lightly raced G W’s Girl, a daughter of Munnings who is the 7-5 program favorite for the Dixie Belle.
Compton said he considered stretching out G W’s Girl (2 for 3 overall) in the $300,000 Martha Washington Stakes Jan. 25 or the $500,000 Honeybee Stakes (G3) Feb. 22 – two 1 1/16-mile Kentucky Oaks preps at Oaklawn – but decided to concentrate on sprints after missing substantial training in January because of harsh winter weather.
“We weren’t able to do much, but she’s doing great,” Compton said. “We’re going to keep her around one turn. I would say that’s more than likely the plan.”
Compton said he’s using Dixie Belle as a bridge to the major spring objective for G W’s Girl, the $400,000 Beaumont Stakes (G2) for 3-year-old fillies at the “about 7 furlongs” distance on April 6 at Keeneland.
Compton trains G W’s Girl for Mag Racing Stables of Gregg Massanelli and Margaret Molleston. Massanelli is an orthopedic surgeon in El Dorado, Ark. Molleston is an executive with GeoSouthern Energy Partners, a petroleum and natural gas production company headquartered in suburban Houston. Compton said Molleston is originally from Magnolia, Ark., about 35 miles west of El Dorado.
G W’s Girl represented Mag’s first stakes winner and fourth victory overall. Compton also saddled Mag’s first winner, Lilms Constitution, Feb. 19, 2024, at Oaklawn. Compton, as an agent for Mag, purchased G W’s Girl for $130,000 at the OBS March Sale of Two-Year-Olds in training.
“They’ve turned down big money for her,” Compton said.
G W’s Girl is scheduled to break from post 6 in the projected seven-horse field under Francisco Arrieta and carry a top weight of 119 pounds. Other top contenders include You’ll Be Back for trainer Tom Amoss and Miss Martini for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen.
You’ll Be Back (1 for 3 overall) returns to sprinting after finishing second, beaten three-quarters of a length by Jenkin, in the one-mile $175,000 Year’s End Stakes Dec. 29. The Year’s End was the two-turn debut for You’ll Be Back, a daughter of Practical Joke who broke her maiden at six furlongs Nov. 30 at Fair Grounds.
“I don’t think that (two turns) is for her, to be honest,” Amoss said. “But she ran great, breaking her maiden in New Orleans. I like the turnback, I really do.”
Miss Martini will be making her stakes and 3-year-old debut after breaking her maiden by 4 ¼ lengths on Dec. 29 at Oaklawn. That six-furlong race was her second lifetime start.
Asmussen also entered Innocence, who exits a five-length victory in the $65,000 Borderplex Stakes at 6 ½ furlongs Jan. 17 at Sunland Park.
Asmussen is seeking his record-extending 117th career Oaklawn stakes victory. He’s won the Dixie Belle a record-tying three times.
