City of Hot Springs Announces New Infrastructure Initiative

Hot Springs – The City of Hot Springs is excited to announce a significant investment in our community’s infrastructure with a million-dollar initiative aimed at improving our sidewalks. The city is now advertising for bids to undertake these crucial sidewalk improvements, focusing primarily on repairing older sidewalks and filling in gaps between existing sections.

Funding for this project comes from multiple sources: an ARDOT Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) Grant, the Our Roads Now initiative, and specific allocations from the City’s budget for sidewalk improvements. By combining funds from two budget years with the TAP grant, the city aims to attract more bidders and benefit from economies of scale, making the most out of every dollar spent.
In the past, the city’s sidewalk projects ranged between $30,000 and $50,000, which unfortunately did not garner much interest from bidders and led to increasing costs. With this larger, more substantial investment, we hope to see better results and greater interest from contractors.
While a million dollars won’t completely solve all of our city’s sidewalk issues, the City Board has shown a strong commitment to ongoing funding for these projects. The focus will be on:
  • Repairing existing sidewalks
  • Removing trip hazards
  • Adding ADA-compliant ramps at intersections
  • Filling gaps in sidewalk networks
  • Providing safe sidewalks around schools
  • Constructing new sidewalks where there is clear pedestrian use
City Manager Bill Burrough emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "Hot Springs is a healthy city where many residents walk. We recognize the impact of safe sidewalks on our community's well-being. One of the popular attractions for both residents and visitors is the ability to walk along our scenic street sidewalks and trails."
We are confident that this investment will enhance the safety and walkability of our city, making Hot Springs an even more inviting place to live, work, and visit.
