Upcoming Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event
Hot Springs - The City of Hot Springs Solid Waste Department is hosting a free Household Hazardous Waste Collection event, including a free paint exchange, on October 12, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m., at the Garland County Fairgrounds, 4831 Malvern Road.
Household hazardous waste is considered unused or leftover household products containing chemicals that are toxic, flammable, corrosive or reactive. These items should not be disposed of in household trash, poured down the drains or just dumped on the ground. Stored improperly at home, these items can become a hazard to children and pets and can cause hazardous fumes or fires.
Accepted residential quantified items include:
- Automotive: Antifreeze, brake or transmission fluid, waxes and polish, and cleaning compounds. (Oil filters are not accepted. Used oil is accepted at many auto service centers).
- Paints: Oil-based, water/latex-based, stains, shellacs, lacquer, varnish, preservatives and aerosol cans.
- Solvents: Mineral spirits, paint thinners, turpentine, alcohol and other non-chlorinated solvents.
- Household Pesticides/Herbicides: Over-the-counter and pet care products.
- Water-Based Cleaners: All home cleaners for carpet, drains, metal, mildew, ovens, toilet and ammonia products.
- Oxidizers: Bleaches, peroxide, carbon tetra chloride.
- Compressed Gas Cylinders: Outdated propane bottles, disposable and expired fuel tanks.
- Flammable Liquids: Kerosene and diesel fuel.
- Tires: Passenger Car Tires (limit to 4 per customer and no rims).
- Electronic: Monitors, CPU’s, keyboards, computer mouses, VCR/DVD players, televisions (19” or smaller), electronic games, etc.
Not accepted items include:
- Commercial quantities
- Unknown products: Products must be in original containers with labels attached.
- Explosive materials
- Lead acid batteries for auto, marine, golf carts, etc.… (can be recycled at most auto garages).
